The Government's Committee on Climate Change has just made its recommendations , and they are certain to prove controversial.
In order to reduce emissions by 2-3% every year until 2050, which is what the Committee says is necessary, it suggests:
- The Government should consider imposing road pricing, in addition to the existing fuel duty
- The current speed limit of 70mph should be rigorously enforced, and maybe reduced further to 60mph
- 240,000 electric cars should be in use in the UK by 2015. This should rise to 1,7 million by 2020
- 8000 more wind turbines should be in place by 2020
- 3 new nuclear power stations should be built
- 4 coal plants with carbon capture and storage systems should be built
- There should be a national programme to insulate homes and install efficient condensing boilers
Peter however, would like to know what you think of these recommendations. The survey will take no longer than 5 minutes to complete, but will help tremendously in understanding the views of local residents.
